Floor Tiles
Tiling a floor will transform any room! Hallways, Conservatories, Bathrooms, Cloakrooms, Kitchens, Dining rooms and even main Living rooms will all benefit.
Tiled floors are a feature in their own right, and they are clean and hygienic and can last a lifetime. Porcelain Tiles are the most common now although natural flooring including Marble, Slate, and Terracotta are getting more popular.
Floor tiles are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, with tiles around 30cms (12ins) being the most popular. Most tiles today are square or rectangular, with multi size sets used to create a flagstone pattern.
Maintenance is easy with only a quick sweep or wash being needed.
Floor Tiles - FAQ's
Do I need to remove the skirting boards?
It makes for a neater job if skirting boards are removed, especially on larger or wooden floors as this allows for expansion movement under the skirting board. Have you thought of using tile edges on the wall as a skirting?
What about doors and kick boards?
Quite often they will require trimming, but this can included in the Quotation.
Can you tile on wood floors?
Yes, but the floor needs to be rigid to prevent movement. If required, this can be achieved by over boarding the existing floor with plywood or tile backer board.
Are floor tiles cold?
Generally they are not cold underfoot especially on wood. In cold locations like a new conservatory or chilly kitchen there is always the option of insulation board or under floor heating.
How soon after a concrete floor is laid can I tile?
Normally six weeks, however by using a fast track adhesive, this can be reduced to three or four days.
How many tiles do I need?
I will be pleased to advise quantities as a part of my written quotation.
Do you supply the adhesive and grout?
Yes, the type of adhesive and grout is vital to the success of any tiling work and I prefer to use the professional products that I am familiar with.
Are tiled floors waterproof?
They are not totally waterproof, even though the same adhesives and grouts are used in swimming pools. However the use of a "tanking system" as used in "Wet Rooms" will make the walls and floor waterproof.
Does grout have to be white or grey?
No, grouts are now available in a variety of colours, although Grey is still the most popular for floors.
What sizes are tiles?
Tiles come in many sizes and are generally square or rectangular in shape, and are sometimes laid with a border tile or mosaic insert. As with bathroom walls, floor tiles are getting bigger, and tiles 600mm square are very common.
What Patterns are possible?
This depends on the different tile sizes available within the tile set. Some tiles are available in 3 or 4 sizes. Please contact me for pattern sample diagrams.
Are there published standards for tiling?
Yes, British Standard 5385 is the code of practice for fixing floor and wall tiles, backed up by technical notes from The Tile Association.
